‘Snow flurries’ are possible on the Granite Belt next week with the Bureau of Meteorology warning a cold front will see most of the state shivering.

SNOW could fall in parts of Queensland next week as a massive cold change sweeps across the state.

The cold front is expected to cause temperatures to plummet from Stanthorpe to Townsville, with the possibility Cairns residents may even need to pull whatever woollies they own out of storage.

Higgins Storm Chasing says the cold temperatures will be caused by a polar air mass forecast to move across southeast Australia during the weekend.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Peter Markworth said temperatures would start to drop from Sunday before getting to single digits from late Tuesday.

“A trough will bring cold air on Sunday and Monday and we are likely to see showers on the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and cold air will follow those showers,” he said.

Mr Markworth said “snow flurries” are likely in NSW and may extend as far north as the Granite Belt. But it is unlikely to that snow will reach ground level, but it is possible some snowflakes will be visible in the air.

“Girraween National Park is more elevated than Stanthorpe and that would be the most likely place to see snowflakes,” he said.

A different weather system may bring showers to coastal areas on Saturday, while inland areas are more likely to get rain on Sunday.

The cold front will see Brisbane temperatures as low as eight degrees on Wednesday, while Gold Coast could get as low as seven.

Parts of tropical northern Queensland could even see temperatures in the single digits.

“Mackay has had quite a run of warmer than average temperatures, and they could drop into single digits by Wednesday as well,” he said.

“Townsville is likely to get into the low teens, and this could potentially even impact Cairns.”
