WARWICK State High School Year 8 debating team claimed victory in the Queensland Debate Union Competition for the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region.

Schools from Warwick to Dalby took part.

Warwick State High debating co-ordinator Judy Hefferan said the girls performed well.

"They had eight debates and won seven of them," she said.

The final was held in Toowoomba on Wednesday night.

The Warwick girls faced St Ursula's College, Toowoomba, and Mrs Hefferan said it was a close result.

"St Ursula's College was undefeated going into the final," she said.

"The topic was Should We Repel the Carbon Tax and the girls were on the negative team.

"We had a split decision: There were three judges and the vote went 2-1."

Mrs Hefferan said she was proud of the girls' efforts.

"If was the first year of debating for them," she said.

"They worked really hard; a lot of the work was done in lunch times and after school."

Mrs Hefferan said debating had many advantages.

"It will help them with their team skills, school works, writing and public speaking."
