Residents across South West Queensland have woken up to plummeting temperatures, frigid winds and unusually cold nights as a late Spring cold snap grips the region.
The cooler temperatures are expected to stick around until the weekend, with the Bureau of Meteorology expecting a daily maximum of 19-22°c across the Darling and Southern Downs.
Bureau of Meteorology’s Steven Hadley said that cold snap has already provided record-breaking temperatures, but is expected to subside by the weekend.
“At Toowoomba Airport, temperatures reached 5.6°c, which is a November record, and 1.3°c at Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt,” Steven Hadley said.
“It’s quite a transition from earlier in the week where it was a lot warmer than average in a lot of places and into the rest of Spring and early Summer we could have cooler and wetter than average weather.
“The way climate models are predicting, we’ll see more likely an unusual amount of colder days and night, leading into early Summer.
“We might see some more strong transitions in temperature suddenly over the next few months, but I don’t think they’ll be any colder than this most recent one.”
Here’s how the weekend is expected to shape up:
Warwick and Southern Downs
Thankfully, the weather should be warming up in time for the weekend, with overnight temperatures still in the low range with 10-13°c, but day time temperatures warming up to the low to mid 20’s.
In Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt, there’s a 50% chance of showers on Saturday, and mostly sunny elsewhere across the region.
By Sunday, the daytime temperatures should be in the mid to high 20’s signaling an end to the colder days.
Toowoomba, Dalby and Darling Downs
In Toowoomba, Saturday is expected to bring medium chance of showers, cleared up by Sunday.
There is the chance of a thunderstorm late Saturday afternoon into the evening.
Temperatures this weekend are expected to be a low of 10°c both days, and reaching a high of the low 20s.
Roma and the Maranoa
Further west, mostly sunny conditions over the weekend, with light winds expected across the region.
Temperatures are expected to warm up across both days with daytime temperatures in mid to high 20s for the Maranoa area.
