Warwick Wolves battling through tough start to season after premiership win in 2020

The premiership-winning Warwick men’s side is struggling to replicate the golden form they displayed in 2020, but the team hopes there is still time to turn the season around.

The Warwick Wolves championship men’s side hoped to keep the momentum from their 2020 premiership win heading into this season, but have instead found tougher competition than ever before.

The team defeated USQ in last year’s Toowoomba Football League championship competition, which prompted the side to move up into the premiership division in 2021.

Despite high hopes coming off the win, 2020 coach and current player Matt Carey said this season had proven a difficult one so far.

“We’re not doing as flash this year, we’re struggling a bit,” Carey said.

Carey said matches were more competitive in the higher division, but it wasn’t the only new challenge plaguing the 2020 champs.

“We’re also struggling with commitment really, so the result aren’t really going our way,” Carey said.

“We’ve had a few good wins, and a few draws, but not as well as we’d hoped.”

Carey said injuries had affected the team, and believed the demand of playing in the top division may be a challenge for the social team.

“We just need to get a rhythm going and better together as a team,” he said.

The Wolves went down 4 – 0 in their home game against the Rockville Rovers over the weekend.

Carey said while there was pressure to get in some solid training sessions, there was a good sense of mateship amount the players.

“It’s a good group of lads, (they) work hard when they’ve got to,” Carey said.

Carey said the team was still looking to strengthen its numbers with those interested invited to attend their training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

“We’ve had a few boys come in just recently to help us out, which is good,” Carey said.

“We’re always looking for new people if anyone’s keen.”

The Wolves face St Albans, who are currently sitting first on the ladder, at Toowoomba this weekend.

Warwick is sitting second-last on the leaderboard having won three and drawn five of their 13 games.
