FLYING rocks and flooded garages plague residents of east Fitzroy Street due to a lack of guttering.

"We have hoons who drive off the road just to kick up dust and water that runs straight through our properties when it rains," fed-up resident Guy Harvey said.

"Guttering is a pretty simple solution; it's all we ask for."

Three times in as many weeks joy riders have torn up the dirt and grass in front of his property, showering his lawn with rocks.

Mr Harvey has resorted to putting up a fence in order to keep his home clear of the shrapnel.

"I would hate to see what would happen if children were standing there as they drive past. These hoons are just idiots," he said.

Mr Harvey's elderly neighbour Joan Mullen is also concerned by her street's disrepair.

"Guttering would stop the hoons and our other problems," she said.

When heavy rain hits the bottom floors and garages of Fitzroy St abodes, they are quickly inundated with water.

"We have approached the council before and a few years back did get a little help when they graded the side of the road," she said.

"It's not in the budget is the usual response we get," Mr Harvey added.

"But I make room in my budget for their rates, why can't they make room for our gutter? I don't think it's too much to ask for."

Council's acting director for Engineering Services Eric Kraak said work along Fitzroy St, east of the Pig and Calf markets, would not be covered by the current project in Fitzroy St.

Mr Kraak said further work between Stanley Ave and the railway line had been proposed but timing was subject to review at budget time.
