Warwick business owners are waiting for the Southern Downs Regional Council to act on requests for adding more disabled car parks and constructing ramps to ensure access is given to all locals.
A report submitted to the Southern Downs Region City Council last month revealed the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) was still awaiting approval of two additional disability car parks.
WIRAC centre manager Karen Peters said she believed the applications for the additional parking spots were lodged at the beginning of 2021.
“With increasing NDIS numbers, we are looking forward to the extra car parking spaces,” Mrs Peters said.
The owner of The Physiotherapy Centre on Palmerin Street, Katie Hay, said for the past year and a half her business had been waiting to receive approval for a concrete ramp to assist clients with mobility issues.
“It’s been at least 18 months,” Mrs Hay said.
“The engineers said it wasn’t easy for them, but we’ve reapproached council to see if there was some solution.”
Despite the wait, Mrs Hays said she understood the demands of the council and was optimistic a solution would be found.
A Southern Downs Regional Council spokesman told Newscorp the organisation was in the process of investigating how the parks can be accommodated.
The spokesman said while accessible parks could include additional ramps to the footpath and remarking of lines, it was still reviewing potential design plans prior to finalisation.
