Warwick man charged with 79 DV offences, including rape, extortion

A Warwick man aged in his 40s has been charged with a raft of alleged violent offences, including dozens of rape and assault with intent to rape, sexual assault and assault occasioning bodily harm.

A Warwick man has been charged with 80 serious criminal charges, with police to allege he committed dozens of sexual domestic violence offences.

All but one of the charges are domestic violence-related, including 48 counts of rape, 17 of assault with intent to commit rape, two of sexual assault, eight of assault occasioning bodily harm, two of assault, and one each of choking, strangulation or suffocation; and extortion.

There is one additional charge of dangerous conduct with a weapon.

It’s understood police will allege the offences were committed at different times over an eight-year period.

The 43-year-old, who cannot be named due to the nature of some of the charges, is on bail.

The matter was briefly mentioned in the Warwick Magistrates Court on Wednesday, with defence lawyer Sarah Campbell telling the court she was awaiting material from the police before the case could progress to the next stage.

“I anticipate there will be an application for cross (examination) at committal, but I need all the material before I can assess that fully,” she said.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess questioned the delay, and said while she was “not being critical” she would make an order to ensure the matter could advance.

“I will direct the arresting officer provide a statement of what is outstanding and what are the anticipated timeframes of the provision of that evidence,” Ms Sturgess said.

The matter was adjourned to the next Warwick committal callover on April 26.
