Warwick residents are on high alert following the latest string of attempted break-ins at rural properties across the region, following a shocking spike in similar crimes.

Reports of “lowlifes” breaking into properties west of Warwick have been swirling around social media, with Warwick police confirming they are investigating a number of incidents.

Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Cameron Slater says the most recent break-in attempt occurred on Cunningham Road, Wheatvale about 5am Monday.

“Most likely the offenders are looking for tools. But often if they’re looking to steal cars, they have to break into the house to steal the keys, as they can’t just hot-wire it,” he said.

Senior Sergeant Slater said the attempted thefts were likely opportunistic, operating on the assumption rural properties were less likely to be locked.

The offences are heightening concern throughout the community, with fears thieves are becoming more “brazen” than past burglary waves. with thieves undeterred by lights being switched on inside the house.

It is believed thieves are targeting machinery, tools and other items that can be easily converted to cash.

Investigations into the attempted thefts continue, with people urged to contact Warwick police on 4660 4444 with any information.
