Almost two years after a blaze destroyed the Warwick East State School administration wing, elated staff and students have welcomed the opening of the new $6.7 million learning centre.
Principal Marina Clarke said the school community had worked “extremely hard” to rebuild and were overjoyed to see the replacement administration building ready for use.
Mrs Clarke said the new building was double the size of the predecessor.
“It has been ‘future-proofed’ as the school continues to grow in enrolment numbers,” she said.
In a school prone to flooding, the building has also been constructed well off the ground.
An element considered in the architectural design with a dark brick line placed around the building indicating historic flood levels.
“This was one of the requirements I requested from the architects when we designed the building,” Mrs Clarke said.
The principal said the outline of the old building was still visible and had been outlined with dark bricks.
“At this stage we are just starting to settle in and there are some finishing touches yet to happen, however nothing that is disrupting our move” Mrs Clarke said.
“All the hard work has been worth it to enjoy these lovely modern new facilities.”
This year commencement on the heritage listed Warwick National School building, located next to the new administration facility, has also begun.
The $1.9m structural work to the Warwick National School Building is expected to be competed in time for the 2022 school year, a spokesman for the Department of Education said.
