A Southern Downs mum who burnt down a neighbour’s garage, causing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage in a ‘revenge’ attack, has been sentenced.
Broadwater mother of three Victoria Alice Green faced Warwick District Court over a horror arson attack on a neighbour that took place in 2023.
On February 15, 2023, days after Green’s dog was run over and killed by a neighbour, the former dog breeder began to prepare for her revenge.
Crown prosecutor Madeline Jones told the court the 32-year-old’s children had found out at school her neighbours had ran over her dog in days previous, which “angered” Green, as the neighbours allegedly did not stop or apologise.
At 11pm on February 15, the court was told Green began to execute her plan, with jerry cans filled with petrol in her vehicle as she arrived to her neighbour’s property.
“She was told by her neighbours to leave, and she poured fuel over two vehicles and used a lighter to set both cars on fire,” Ms Jones said.
“The fire burned so much the cars melted into the concrete, and both vehicles were written off, and the cars and shed were extensively damaged.”
Green slashed car tyres and struck the neighbours gate when leaving, with emergency services arriving before “the fire could spread and the building was completely lost”.
Ms Jones said the fire caused about $30,000 of damage.
Police shortly caught up with Green, who was busted with the same lighter and wearing the same clothes, which had a “strong smell of accelerant”.
“In the interview, she said it was in retaliation for killing her dog,” Ms Jones said.
“It was deeply premeditated in an act of revenge. (Her actions) destroyed two cars and could have had disastrous consequences by spreading further, and showed disregard for the safety and property of the owners.”
In Warwick District Court on May 7, 2024, Green pleaded guilty to one charge each of enter premise and wilful damage, and two charges of arson.
Judge Dennis Lynch KC slammed the woman’s actions as “not acceptable,” and described the offending as “very serious”.
“Besides the $30,238 in damages which has a significant impact upon them no doubt, this was also a very frightening experience and it was very dangerous,” Judge Lynch said.
The judge also told the court the woman had no prior criminal history before this offending, and described the offending as “out of character”.
“These offences are a retaliation, the community would understand someone would be upset over the loss of a dog, but your reaction was unacceptable and it is not acceptable to take matters into your own hands to inflict some measure of revenge on someone else.”
Green was sentenced to a total of three years imprisonment, and was immediately released on parole.
