Tree knocked over and powerlines downs after storm cells hammers Darling Downs

Southern Downs residents have some long, hot days ahead as they repair and clean up from Wednesday night’s storm.

A massive clean-up is under way after storms ripped through the Darling Downs, pulling up trees and damaging homes.

Warwick was hit the hardest.

Wind tore the roof of the Warwick Turf Club, brought down powerlines and destroyed a shed.

At least one home was damaged when a tree fell on it.

The clubs took to social media to announce the cancellation of Friday’s race meeting

“Following last night’s severe storm, inspections at Picklebet Allman Park have confirmed significant damage to key racing infrastructure including the winning post, running rail, tie-ups, members bar, office, residence and machinery shed,” the club said.

The SES recieved 41 called for help in the Darling Downs and Lockyer on Wednesday night with 26 of those calls comming from Warwick residents.

There was a cluster of calls significant roof damage along Wallace and Victoria Streets, near the turf club.

While the storm was violent, it brought little rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded only 8mm of rain in Warwick 13mm at Killarney and 4mm at Allora.

The biggest falls were on the Western Downs with 48mm recorded to the north of Jandowae, 91mm at Belgrae Creek and 66mm at Cooringa.

BOM is forecasting a partly cloudy Thursday with a slight chance of a shower and the chance of a thunderstorm with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding from the late morning.

Winds tending west to south-westerly are forecast to hit 30-45 km/h in the late morning and afternoon.

Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to sit around 40.

As of 10.30am on Thursday widespread power outages were affecting large areas of the Western Down along with pockets near Warwick.

About 1800 homes and businesses are without power in Dalby and the Tara areas, while 350 homes and businesses are affected in Warwick.
