A performer has put out a call out on social media to save a piece of Australian history and keep an iconic business in local hands.

Dancing with the Stars’ Todd McKenney has taken to Facebook in an effort to save the Tenterfield Saddler, with some big names suggested as potential buyers the business to “keep it in Australian hands”.

The heritage-listed 153-year-old saddlery inspired a song by legendary performer Peter Allen, putting the small border town on the international stage with the building being one of the most-visited attractions in the town.

In a post that has more than 1.5k comments and 2k shares McKenney wrote on Facebook that the saddlery was part of “our nation's heart”.

“The Tenterfield Saddlery is up for sale! That’s not OK – unless it falls into the right hands. We must save this piece of Australian history,” the star wrote.

“For the past 25 years I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the effect the song Tenterfield Saddler has on audiences around Australia and it means the world to them.

“It means the world to me too – as an Australian. Out of all of Peter’s hits, Tenterfield Saddler is the song everyone wants to hear – even the way I sing it.”

At the end of the post McKenney put the call out to Australian celebs to ensure the building remains as a drawcard for Tenterfield and surrounds.

“Maybe Hugh Jackman and I should rally the troops and get into saving this iconic piece of history.”

The sale of the property, handled by Lloyds Brokers, also includes the trademarks, intellectual property, shopfront, and land of iconic Australian brand.

Lloyds Brokers state they have received interest in the purchase by big names such as David Jones, Castlemaine Breweries and Mercedes-Benz.

However, fans of the iconic landmark shouldn’t worry the building will be demolished anytime soon.

The saddlery has been around since 1870, and due to its status as a heritage listed building, the buyer would be unable to buy it and destroy it.
