The Sacred Heart Church at Deuchar has been a well-loved place of worship and a gathering place for the community for more than a century, but is set to enter its next era under new ownership.

The iconic white-brick church was snapped up at auction over the weekend, taking its 102-year history into a new chapter.

Ray White Rural Pittsworth auctioneer Matt Cleary said the property had drawn buyers from right across southern Queensland and northern NSW.

“I’ve been selling for 30 years and it’s one of the most interesting (properties) I’ve had,” Mr Cleary said.

Mr Cleary said the church was a landmark property and its unique, well-kept fittings had drawn in quite a crowd.

“We had around 160 people through the property and 42 registered bidders,” he said.

The starting bid for the Sacred Heart Church was $100,000, with the historic property proving in-demand with a winning bid of $385,000.

Mr Cleary said several pews from within the building were also up for sale on the day, with families who originally donated land to the church among those snapping them up.

The church’s new owners, who did not wish to be named, said it was their strong family connection to the area that made them so eager to buy up the property.

“We really just wanted to own a piece of history,” one of buyers said.

While residents say they would love to see the picturesque church converted into a wedding venue, they will have to wait while the new owners decide what is next for the Deuchar landmark.
