Stanthorpe Art Gallery is gearing up for a series of upgrades which will reduce risk concerns regarding the gallery, which are planned to start hopefully ‘very soon.’

The current building was built in 1988, and houses $4 million dollars worth of precious art, including works by Pablo Picasso and Margaret Olley.

In notes from a Southern Downs Regional Council meeting in 2021, the gallery notes that new gallery would benefit the whole region.

Currently, art is stored in the same room as the electrical switches, which pose significant risk to the art and personnel.

Stanthorpe Art Gallery manager Mary Findlay said the work on the gallery will begin soon.

“We have a small community and it really is an outstanding gallery for such a town, we have an extremely good reputation across the state,” Mrs Findlay said.

“The gallery is beautiful and I’m glad were staying where we are, we have easy accessibility for local people which is the most important thing.”

The planned upgrades have caused the Stanthorpe gallery to innovate and evolve, and think differently about how they want to present into the future.

“We’re organising an online collection, and we’re doing some things differently which is exciting because we wouldn’t have done it without these changes coming,” she said.

“You have to keep reinventing yourself to move with technology, the gallery itself will match the beautiful collection inside, we’re just trying to put a smile on people’s faces and keep going into the future.”
