GLANCING at the six-foot, long-legged, 17-year-old Jarrod Walker, one would assume he would have little trouble making his way over the high jump bar, or anything for that matter.
However what is surprising is just how good he is at it, so good he is heading to the state championships at the end of October.
Walker took home three medals at the Darling Downs competition earlier this month, the only Warwick High triple medal winner on the day.
With gold in high jump and silver in both long jump and triple jump, Walker was very happy with the day's efforts.
"I had no idea I was going to win so many. I had never gotten into Darling Downs before this year," an ecstatic Walker said. Although he was surprised by his wins the high school senior said it was not a fluke.
"I had always liked high jump, ever since I won in year 4 I always gave it a go," he said.
The young athlete's training had consisted of just a general fitness regime. Now, however, Walker plans to take on a much more serious attitude to athletics and train with his dad in the lead-up to the state championships.
Asked about his inspiration, Walker sighed and brushed the sand out of his shock of white hair. "My girlfriend," he said, blushing.
Sport will remain his focus. When he graduates from high school this year he plans to study HPE teaching at USQ in Toowoomba.
