NO SLOWING DOWN: New record at Karting Club

FIRST-TIMERS race to the track, club forced to turn people away.

YOUNG AND OLD: There was no age limit for racers looking to take to the track this weekend.

KARTING: A record number of eager karting enthusiasts will take to the track for the Warwick Karting Club’s first come and try day.

Currently sitting at 42 registered drivers, this Sunday’s event will give prospective racers the opportunity to sample the thrills of the sport.

“We’ll have cadet, junior and senior karts available for people to use during the session,” club secretary Fiona Williams said.

Shocked by the amount of people wanting to take to the track, the club had to restrict the number of registered participants according to Williams.

“We were hoping to get about 20 people on the day but we’ve ended up with double that and we’re just over the moon,” she said.

“We’ve had so many, we’ve just had to stop taking more people in.

“We don’t want to take away from the people who’d already put their name down weeks ago.”

The list of incoming racers wasn’t restricted to juniors, with the whole family sport appealing to mums and dads too.

“From six year-olds to 50-year-olds, we’ve got everyone,” she said.

“Some of them have family that have raced before and others are complete new comers.

“One of the dads whose son has been racing for a couple of years has decided to give it a go.

“I think his son had been bugging him about it for years to try it.”

While the chance to take to the track this weekend has closed for many, Williams said the club are already looking to hold another come and try day on May 24.

“Even if people aren’t on the track on Sunday, they’re more than welcome to come down and see what the club is about, and talk to our club members,” she said.

“For those on the track, we’ll do a safety talk and show them how the karts work. They’ll then do two five-minute stints on the track.

“We’ll only have two people on the track at one time and they’ll be separated – so it’ll basically be like they’re on the track on their own.”
