New pistol shooter inspired by Commonwealth Games experience

A HUGE number of people rolled up to try the sport with volunteers from as far as Brisbane on hand to help out.

SHOOTING: After being a volunteer for the shooting at last year's Commonwealth Games, Tracy Lazanski is eyeing off pistol shooting as a sport.

Lazanski was one of 60 prospective members who attended a come-and-try day on Sunday at the Warwick Pistol Club range in Rosehill Rd.

Volunteers from as far as Brisbane were on hand to instruct the prospective members on the safety aspects of the sport.

"I put in to be a volunteer and was selected for the shooting at Belmont in Brisbane,” Lazanski said.

"It was very special when I was given the honour of putting the flags up at the start of games shooting; not many people can say they have done that.”

She was selected to work at the shooting despite not being involved in the sport at the time.

Lazanski said she built up a love of the sport during the Commonwealth Games and after moving to Warwick two months ago headed along to the come-and-try day.

"I enjoyed meeting people at the Warwick Pistol Club. The social aspect of the sport attracts me,” she said.

Russell Brown was also at the come-and-try day and enjoyed the variety of shooting.

"I am from a military background, the more variety the better,” Brown said.

Pistol club captain Bob Campbell said the come-and-try day attracted twice as many prospective members as expected.

"Some were attracted as every member of the family can compete in pistol shooting,” Campbell said.

"Most were keen on both the air pistol and 22 calibre shooting.”

The club shoots air pistol indoors at 7pm each Thursday and 9am each Sunday.

The club has major events each year in February and October. An action match competition will be held at the range in Rosehill Rd on April 14 from 8am and prospective members are welcome.
