MOTORSPORT: Melbourne rider Wayne Maxwell proved age does not matter in motorsport when he won the Warwick round of the Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championships at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend.

Maxwell set the early pace and maintained the lead to win the 16-lap race second race late Sunday afternoon.

At age 36, he is one of the oldest in the field but has not thought of retiring.

"While the body is good, I will keep racing,” he said.

"I love racing and love being part of the Suzuki team.

"I have always said if I am not getting the results, I will step aside for a younger rider to ride for the team and I can help him out.”

The overall win in Warwick was the second for Maxwell in four superbike rounds in Warwick.

He won in 2017 as part of the Yamaha team.

"It is fantastic to race in Warwick,” he said.

"The crowd is always great.”

He is a professional motorcycle rider and spends a lot of time cycling to boost his fitness.

"I am a carpenter so do a bit of building work.” Maxwell said.

Maxwell said after some overcast days, it was great the sun came out for the two races on Sunday.

The first race on Sunday was won by Brisbane rider Mike Jones who calls Morgan Park his home track.

He was the fastest qualifier on Saturday to secure poll position for both Sunday races.

Jones said he started his road racing career at Morgan Park Raceway.

The main support class, the supersport championship on 600cc bikes, was won by Goulburn rider Tom Toparis who flies out of Australia on Sunday night for six weeks of 600cc racing in Germany.
