BOXING: Fight for the Farmers was almost in search of a new home after recent heavy rain closed Father Ranger Oval.
However, a week of warmer weather has ensured Saturday night’s fight night will have the green light to go ahead.
“I was a little nervous there for a while,” event organiser Chris Fox said.
“At this stage, it’s looking like it’ll be good to have it down on the oval, but we have a back-up plan if we get some more rain.”
While potential venue changes threatened the night, Fox was also dealt a blow to the corporate card with several boxers withdrawing from then fight.
“There are still some pretty good fights on there,” he said.
“We’ve lost the fight between cousins Josh Cruice and Brent Freeman, so I’m not really sure what the main draw card will be.
“But the fight between the two Beckhouse brothers – Gavin and Geordie – should be really good because they’ve both fought before.”
Surprised by the number of fighters taking to the ring for the first time, Fox was impressed by the commitment of a number of young fighters.
“Most of the boys have been down at the gym sparring and doing a lot of training,” he said.
“Young Jordyn Hogden surprised me – he came down to the gym and he looks really good.
“For a bloke that’s never done anything like this before, he’s just taken to it like a duck to water.”
Fighting for more than just victory, Fox is hopeful to raise money for farmers in need.
“We’ve had some beautiful rain but we’re still a long way from the drought being broken,” he said.
“It’s all for a good cause, and I love doing this sort of stuff.
“I love it – I get in and referee all of the fights and announce it all.”
Gates to Father Ranger Oval open at 5pm. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, adults $20 and children $10.
