RUGBY LEAGUE: Warwick Cowboys prop Simona Vavega is playing better each game and coach Matt Grew expects to see the best of him in the next few weeks.

Vavega has been part of the Broncos system and joined the Cowboys in the first round.

He has formed a solid front row combination with Jarred Bradfield who is one of the best of the Cowboys week in week out.

Grew was happy with the training session on Tuesday which followed a footy-free weekend.

The Cowboys trained again on Thursday night and will head to Clifton on Sunday for the second fixture game between Warwick and Wattles this season.

While Wattles won the Barrett Shield game, Warwick won the first-round clash.

Grew said his team was always keen to play the top side in the competition.

"Wattles are the best team at the moment, they won the Madsen Rasmussen Trophy final at the weekend,” he said.

Grew is impressed with how the Cowboys reserve-grade side is going.

"If they keep improving, they will see themselves in the finals,” Grew said.

The Warwick coach wants the club's reserve graders putting pressure on for spots in A grade.

After missing some football due to representative commitments, hooker Ben Sullivan only has club footy to consider for the rest of the season.

This week's game is on a Sunday afternoon which reminds Grew of the years he was a ball boy for Cowboys home games in a era all rugby league was played on a Sunday.

"Larger crowds go to Saturday night games which benefits clubs financially,” he said.

The Cowboys have three players out of senior teams on Sunday, A-grade winger Mitch Watson, A-grade centre/second rower Cody Byrne and forward Coen Martin-Brown who has played in both reserve and A grade this season.

They have representative commitments with the Clydesdales under-20s.
