Warwick’s newest firey has been welcomed to the station to begin his new career with an interesting partner – his own father.
After graduating from fire and rescue training last week, Benjamin Sullivan began his new firefighting career in the Rose City on Wednesday.
He joins his dad Mark at the station, a firey in Warwick for 30 years, after growing up watching his dad enjoy the job.
“I’m just figuring out how the station works at the moment, it was a pretty gruelling process for 16 weeks in training, it’s good to be back out here and sleep in my own bed,” Benjamin said.
“I’ve had plenty of exposure to the fire station, growing up it was a part of my life and I’ve sort of met most of the people here before I came out here.”
The 32-year-old said growing up with his father as a firefighter showed him that there were a lot of good people in the industry, and he knew he wanted to enter it no matter how hard it was.
“I always wanted to do it, I always wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Benjamin said.
“Dad was a major contributor and being around the station growing up, but I always knew I wanted to do it, it just took a bit longer than I was expecting.
“I think he’s proud of me, he’s been here 30 years, so it’s always been something to look up towards.”
A spokesman for QFES said that before deciding to become a firefighter, Benjamin had his own business and left it to the wayside to chase his dream.
“He says he always wanted to be a firefighter after growing up seeing how much his dad got out of the job,” the spokesman said.
