Warwick crime wrap-up: Police investigating spat of break and enters, traffic matters

Warwick police are investigating a number of matters ranging from a woman who allegedly crashed her car while three times over the limit, to a series of break and enters at both residences and businesses. Here’s what you missed from the past seven days.

Police have been busy following up on several reported incidents across the region, ranging from break and enters at both businesses and homes, to drink drivers, to significant traffic crashes.

Break and enters

On August 1 about 4am, a man has entered a house in Kidman Drive but after being disturbed by the homeowner, they fled.

How the offender has entered the house is still being investigated.

— Warwick police received notice that a tobacconist on Palmerin St had been broken into on July 31.

It’s believed that the offenders forced entry through the rear of the premises, but no property was reported stolen.

It comes only a matter of weeks after another break and enter at a tobacconist on Palmerin St, in which a trio of offenders made off with products stolen from the business.

On August 1 about 4.30pm, Warwick Police attempted to intercept a Black Audi sedan on Palmerin St after observing the car driving in a particular manner.

The Audi allegedly sped off and evaded police, but authorities later located the offender, a 32-year-old Warwick male, who was charged with evading police.

He remains in custody in relation to this and other offences to appear in Warwick Magistrates Court later in August.

It is believed the man was involved in the break and enter at the tobacconist on July 31.

— On the evening of August 5, an address on Moncrieffe St was targeted by an opportunistic offender, with the assailant entering the premises via breaking through the rear window.

The offender or offenders stole a set of car keys and drove off with a Toyota station wagon.

The vehicle was located a short time later, heavily damaged, at Wildash, south of Warwick.

Police are currently investigating the matter.

Traffic matters

At about 9pm on August 1, a minor traffic crash occurred on Ogilvie Rd in north Warwick where a Holden sedan collided with a parked car.

No injuries were sustained, however a 24-year-old Maryvale woman was subsequently breath tested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor after allegedly returning a reading of 0.179 BAC.

She will appear in Warwick Magistrates Court at the end of August.

— On Sunday afternoon, emergency services responded to a severe crash on the New England Highway, south of Warwick.

Two vehicles – a sedan and a heavy truck carrying fuel – collided at the intersection of the highway and Rosenthal Rd.

Tragically, a woman aged in her 40s died at the scene.

The crash ignited a large fire around the truck and plumes of black smoke could be seen kilometres away from the scene. The truck and trailer were destroyed.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the fire had impeded paramedics’ access to the injured person in the sedan.

Local police confirmed the matter remains under investigation by Forensic Crash Unit investigators.
