A police raid has landed a Warwick couple back in court yet again, this time after they were busted with a homegrown drug stash in their family home.
Officers searched Kylie Marie Allen and Nigel Alan Swift’s McEvoy Street home on April 30, where they found two 60cm-tall marijuana plants and another that was about 5cm tall on the back doorstep.
The Warwick Magistrates Court heard the 27-year-old mother and her 40-year-old partner also had 2.9g of marijuana and seven of the plant’s seeds stashed in their bedroom.
Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa said the raid also uncovered a bong made from a plastic water bottle, scissors, a set of scales, and a grinder in the couple’s home.
Swift and Allen appeared in the Warwick court with lengthy criminal records, with each of them on probation and Allen also on parole at the time of this latest offending.
Duty lawyer Clare Hine said the couple began their relationship about three years ago, with Swift acting as a father to Allen’s daughters aged eight and four.
The youngest child was present in the courtroom during her parents’ proceedings.
Ms Hine told the court the Warwick woman used drugs to self-medicate her depression and anxiety, particularly after her brother’s death last year, but the pair were equally culpable in the offending.
“Since being arrested, they’ve been supporting one another to stay drug-free. They have no other family in Warwick, so really rely on each other,” she said.
Magistrate Julian Noud urged the pair to take advantage of their probation orders to break their drug addictions for good, especially in light of their extensive drug-related history.
Allen and Swift pleaded guilty to one count each of producing a dangerous drug, possessing a dangerous drug, and possessing drug utensils.
They were each fined $1000.
