Wide running second rower made Cowboys history

LONG time between drinks for Warwick Cowboys but is this the year?

THE excitement of the Warwick Cowboys fans leading into the TRL grand final on Sunday has to be seen to be believed.

There is nothing to excite like a large gap, in this case 31 years, between possible grand final wins.

We shouldn't call Matt Grew as the super coach but he has never got off message, the Cowboys are aiming for a top-three spot and have the ability to beat any team in the competition.

The players have responded and I even saw a woman about 6pm Tuesday putting blue, white and red streamers on a power pole in McEvoy Street.

Grand finals have also been far between, it is important to make the most of it.

I can still remember that Luke Brennan try wide out in the north-east part of the ground to win Warwick the 1987 premiership under captain-coach Brian Dunne.

It was expected the ball would be sent out to punishing centre Simon Beattie but Luke was a second rower running wide for the winning try. The Cowboys also won A grade in 1988.

Perhaps captain Mick Bloomfield will do the same this time. I went to the 1987 grand final as Joe Citizen and could just about go to the same seat on Sunday, I didn't become a sports reporter until 1991.

What about Warwick having the majority of the support at the grand final on Sunday?

Hockey finals

THE amazing lights at the Warwick Hockey Association build up the atmosphere for night hockey in town.

The junior and senior grade finals are all on Saturday.

Wyverns will play Harlequins at 5pm and then Saints will do battle with Wyverns in the 7pm game.
