THE biggest government funded project to be undertaken in Killarney is nearing completion as the Memorial Aged Care centre prepares to open its new facility.

The project, which has cost in excess of $10 million, is now in its final stages as building compliance checks are set to be completed at the end of the month.

KMAC CEO Christine Scroop said she hoped to have facility open by September.

The building will upgrade the centre's room capacity to 30 as well as adding a larger industrial kitchen, underground parking and new social areas.

Mrs Scroop said the development was a natural progression in an industry that requires constant evolving.

She said staying compliant to national standards could be difficult in an older facility.

"The standards are always evolving,” she said.

"From making sure residents have control over the heating and cooling to maintaining appropriate bathrooms and infection control,” she said.

The new development features a sleek, modern design, assuring patients will be provided with optimal comfort.

The spacious balconies of the new rooms overlook much of Killarney, a feature Mrs Scroop said was important for the patients.

"A lot of the people we have in the centre grew up in the town and can lookout and see their old home,” she said.

"We are doing our best to put patients in rooms where they can see their house.”

"The views are fantastic from every room.”

The centre will also be able to accommodate for couples thanks to the new partner rooms.

As well as providing care at the national standard, the upgrade was also necessary because the 49 bed centre is currently at capacity.
