Man failed to heed jail threat

WHEN Christopher James Rayner was jailed for glassing, the judge offered a warning that any further offending could see him back behind bars after his release.

WHEN Christopher James Rayner was jailed in 2011 for glassing a 61-year-old man, the sentencing judge offered a strict warning that any further offending could see him back behind bars after his release.

Despite the caution, the now 35-year-old has been brought back before the courts after racking up a further two convictions while on parole.

In May 2011, the then-34-year-old was given an 18-month jail sentence for smashing a schooner glass into the face of the older man and then proceeding to hit and kick the man.

The attack at a Clifton hotel left the victim with a cut to his eyelid and a damaged tear duct.

The Warwick District Court heard the attack was retaliation for the man having called Rayner's niece a "slut".

Rayner was released from custody after serving six months in jail and was placed on parole until May, 2014.

A condition of parole was the father-of-one was not to commit any further offences during the remainder of the term.

Less than one year after being released from jail, a drunken Rayner drove from his home and crashed his car 200m down the road.

The court yesterday heard the Warwick man chose to drive - despite being unlicensed and intoxicated - as a way to remove himself from an argument with his partner.

Police attended the scene when neighbours reported the domestic dispute but Rayner - who had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.134 - had fled the crashed vehicle and returned to his home.

Rayner was unco-operative with police when they tried to arrest him and had to be restrained on the ground to be handcuffed.

The court heard three children were in the room at the time of the arrest.

In March this year, Rayner pleaded guilty in the Warwick Magistrates Court to drink driving and obstructing police and was ordered to spend one month in jail.

Yesterday he also pleaded guilty to breaching his parole by committing those offences.

Rayner was sentenced to 12 months jail but was released on immediate parole.
