Jumper and Jazz tree jumper artists share exclusive details on ‘crackers’ interpretation

With Warwick’s iconic Jumpers and Jazz festival officially under way, tree jumper artists have given the Warwick Daily news a look into their masterpieces.

With Warwick’s winter streets once again decorated with handcrafted colourful creations, artists have given the Daily News a deeper look into their ‘crackers creations.

One group, which uses art as a way to promote social inclusion for those with mental illness, has decided to take a retrospective look through gaming culture.

Demented Art Group Incorporated (DAG) president Corina Graham said the group was enthusiastic to tackle the theme.

“(Gaming is) quite relevant as lots of our members game for a social thing, and that’s always something that comes up in conversation,” Ms Graham said.

Ms Graham said while DAG was an art group, not all members considered themself artists, but rather used the practice of making to connect.

“Doing anything with your hands gets rid of the uncomfortableness,” she said.

While the group might have tackled their own parts of the tree jumper individually, Ms Graham said interaction was an important aspect of the project.

“It’s the involvement that makes everyone feel a part of the community,” she said.

“It’s really helps us develop and be part of a community, which helps them in the mental health.”

This will be the seventh tree jumper the group has completed.

Despite a little stress in the lead up to installation, Ms Graham said it was always worth it.

“Everyone needs a goal, and (the group) needs something to work towards,” she said.

“It’s an achievement.”
