Julie is just glad to help

VOLUNTEERS are the backbone of any sporting carnival or event and without them there would be no-one to man the barbecues, smatter the hot chips with tomato sauce or hand out the lolly bags.

Julie See has been volunteering for the Warwick Hockey club for 11 years, and will be busily working in the canteen all week during the Under 13 State Hockey Titles.

Mrs See does not even have any children competing in the event this year.

"My 16-year-old is working at the tech bench and helping the Warwick boys do their warm-up training," she said.

"So while he's here I'm doing the canteen.

"I'm happy to help out, especially when they are short on numbers."

Mrs See plays a very important role in the running of the canteen.

"The ladies downstairs take care of all the cooking and preparation and I just take the orders and money."

There are many goodies on offer at the canteen.

"We do hot chocolates, coffees, hamburgers, sausage rolls and chicken and gravy rolls," she said.

"The chicken and gravy rolls and the beef and gravy rolls have definitely been the most popular.

"But today the hot chocolates have been a crowd-pleaser as well."

She said it had been a busy week with some teams even pre-ordering their lunches.

Mrs See said she expected that the profits would be considerable.

"I think so, by the time the end of week comes we should have made a fair amount," she said.

Last year's floods destroyed the hockey fields at Queen's Park and Mrs See said it was great to be back in action.

"It's good," she said.

"Last year because their was no senior tournament a lot of the players went to Toowoomba to play.

"It's great to have them and all the kids back in action."
