A man who crashed his vehicle on the Cunningham Highway was found by emergency services lying face down in the grass in his underwear, sweating and rambling nonsense.
James Christopher Davies was found like this by police officers responding to a single-vehicle crash at Tregony at 2am on February 26.
Police noticed the man was “incoherent” when he was found stripped down, sweating profusely lying face down in the ground next to his vehicle, which had run off the road, Warwick Magistrates Court was told.
Officers observed damage to the vehicle, which had come off the road and sit almost “parallel” to the highway.
Davies was taken to the hospital, where it was discovered he had been driving with both methylamphetamine and cannabis in his system.
After searching the vehicle, police found 1.6g of meth, two clipseal bags of cannabis weighing 5.6g and 2.6g, a used pipe, scales and three used syringes.
The man pleaded guilty to six charges on Wednesday, including driving under the influence, two counts of drug possession, possessing used drug utensils as well as an item believed to be proceeds of crime, and driving without due care.
Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the court the man had a “very limited” criminal history but said this offending was “significant”.
“You’re lucky you didn’t collide with another vehicle, and you’re luckily only your vehicle was damaged,” Ms Sturgess said.
“You’re extremely lucky no one else was hurt. When you are failing to exercise proper control and driving under the influence of drugs you are a danger to the community.
“Not only were you a danger in the manner of your driving, but you had drugs in your car which causes a health and safety risk to the police who were searching through your property as well, which is significant.”
Davies received a 12 month probation order and was suspended from driving for 12 months.
No conviction was recorded.
