A young man “cried all night” in a cell following his arrest for horror DV offending which left his victim ‘shattered,’ a court has been told.

The Inglewood man - a 24-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons - pleaded guilty in Warwick District Court on February 5 to common assault, strangulation in a domestic setting and wilful damage (domestic violence offence).

The court was told how the man began arguing with his partner at the time, a then-18-year-old woman, after a cat had urinated in the house.

Crown prosecutor Sam Rigby detailed how the man pushed the woman onto the bed and began choking the woman so severely it caused bruising to her neck.

The woman scratched the man in an attempt to get him away, to which he destroyed a model car by throwing it at the wall before he pushed the woman against a wall.

The man was arrested and remanded in custody for one day.

“The woman had bruising to her neck and hands … she was forced to relocate and her sense of security was shattered, she became isolated and lonely,” Mr Rigby told the court.

The man’s defence barrister Stephen Kissick said the man was a hard worker who had worked as a labourer before moving on to other work, and noted the young man was “unlikely to return to court”.

“I see a night in the watch house where he cried the entire time and was shocked to be there to be punishment enough to satisfy the concept of personal deterrents,” Mr Kissick said.

Judge Nathan Jarro simply replied, “good”.

The judge told the young man that his offending was “serious” and he could have easily been spending seven years in prison for the offending.

“Women should be able to feel safe in their home without being assaulted. Domestic violence is not tolerated by the community,” Judge Jarro said.

For the charge of strangulation the man was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, with one day declared time served.

The man was released on parole immediately.

For the further two charges, the man was convicted and not further punished. Convictions were recorded.
