A new contractor has been appointed for a major project in the Southern Downs, with its new opening date finally revealed.

Stanthorpe Library and Art Gallery was a prominent redevelopment, originally slated to be completed in March of this year, after being announced at the tail end of 2022.

The project was previously valued at $6.1m by former contractors, national firm St Hilliers.

However earlier this month, news broke that the construction firm collapsed into administration, halting all projects including the Stanthorpe development and a defence project west of Ipswich, as well as dozens of projects around the country.

On Wednesday, Southern Downs Regional Council confirmed they had appointed a new contractor following St Hilliers entering administration.

Australian company ICM Construction has been appointed as the new contractor that council will use to finish the construction of the precinct.

In a statement, Southern Downs Regional Council confirmed the project was “remaining on schedule for completion” for the “first half of 2024”.

Council’s chief executive Dave Burges said council worked efficiently to minimise the downtime following the setback and the project is again on track.

“Following a thorough and diligent contractual process, council has progressed the project and appointed a new contractor to continue the balance of works,” Mr Burges said.

The gallery and library hold more than $4m worth of content, including approximately $3m of artworks, and $1m in books.

“The new contractor will have some heavy lifting to do offsite in the first few weeks, investigating the works, checking compliance, and most importantly, assembling the required subcontractors to finish the project,” Mr Burges said.

“Council’s commitment to complete the project remained a priority, and the appointment of ICM Constructions ensured its timely delivery.”
