Small communities can often become isolated without the combined support of local and other organisations rallying to bring events together.
Hosts of the 2024 Legends of Charity event, Goomburra Valley Campground’s Teresa and Brad Badgery understand the importance of bringing small communities together.
Originally from Wallumbilla east of Roma in western Queensland, the Badgery’s know first hand what living in a small, rural community is like.
“It’s really important to have these events in small communities because it brings everyone together,” she said.
“It can be really isolating and lonely for people in those smaller communities, and it’s a good feeling to be able to connect (with others).”
The Legends of Charity event is organised by a group of camping gurus who bonded through their YouTube channels and came together for their first official event held last year in Hervey Bay.
YouTube camping guru ‘The Wanderer Aus’ Rob Jamieson and his fellow comrades were inspired by their good friend Buck, who held similar events with the sole purpose of bringing people who share a mutual love of camping and common interest in helping others together to raise money for local charities.
Mr Jamieson said Goomburra Valley was one of his favourite camping spots to visit and had now racked up seven visits within the past year, with another visit in the works before the end of the year.
“It’s just got everything and it’s in the most beautiful spot,” he said.
The five other brains behind the charity event include camping enthusiast's Robert Richmond ‘Australian Camping and Four Wheel Drives’, Stephen and Annie Fuller ‘S. A. W Adventures’, Phillip Damiano ‘Phil’s Camping Reviews’, and Terry Gee ‘Master of All Trades’.
A number of local businesses will also be involved in the weekend of events filled with raffles, stalls and other entertainment.
The event has already attracted lots of interest with only two spots remaining at the campground.
“I’m just in awe of the (Legend for Charity) group and how they get together to support these charities,” she said.
“We’ve had people calling in from overseas to make sure there’s a spot for them and so far we’ve got around 12 to 13 stallholders coming.”
Southern Downs ARK and RACQ Lifeflight Toowoomba have been selected by the Badgery’s as the nominated charities who will see a split of the money raised from next year’s event.
A cause near and dear to the Badgery’s heart, who have been holding weekly raffles for the past two and half years to raise money for Toowoomba Life Flight.
Managing to raise an impressive $23,000 and are working towards having a helicopter pad built on the campground for Lifeflight to land with ease when responding to nearby incidents.
Goomburra Valley Campground are still taking bookings for next year’s event, with very limited spots available don’t miss your chance to be a part of a life changing event.
