Goalie addition spurs Warwick Wolves on for top four finish

An addition of a new player has the Warwick Wolves Premier Ladies ready to take on the competition in the lead up to the finals.

It has been a mixed season for the Warwick Wolves ladies as they mark first half milestone, but the team has their sights firmly set on finals.

The 2020 Toowoomba Football League runners-up are sitting sixth on the ladder after playing 12 games.

Wolves coach Bruce Greenaway said despite a few losses, the team was off to a good start.

“In the first half of the season there had been some games we should have won,” he said.

“But they’re really hitting their stride, and are very committed.”

Greenaway said it was a tough competition, with the two playing divisions merging this year and pushing women up a level.

The team took a beating when they took on Willowburn at a home game on the weekend with the visitors winning, 10-1.

Greenaway said the addition of a dedicated goalkeeper would be a big advantage as they headed into the second half of the season.

“Often we’ve been putting up a good outfield player and they’d have to take it turns,” he said.

The Wolves were set to take on the Gatton Redbacks this weekend, but COVID lockdowns just days out have created uncertainty.

Gatton is currently sitting in ninth place, having only won one of their games this season.

Greenaway said the team had its hopes set on a top-four finish.

If the Wolves want to keep their final hopes alive, they will have to overtake USQ and the Rockville Rovers to claim fourth spot.
