Warwick’s premier rugby league team is in for a major upgrade and shake-up ahead of the 2023 season and pre-season training is just around the corner for the Rose City side.
The club announced earlier this month the appointment of new coach, Colin Speed, for the top coaching job for the A Grade side.
Speed has previously coached Toowoomba sides Clydesdales and Newtown Lions in the TRL, as well as a number of premiership-winning teams south of the border in the NSWRL Group 2 competition.
Speed said that he was over the moon with his new job and extremely grateful for the opportunity.
“I’m so grateful for the chance to work with another group of men and learn so much from them, and I hope I can pass some knowledge I’ve learnt along the way as well,” Speed said.
“They’ve all got a good work ethic, I think they’ve got good country values and they want to play footy tough and hard.”
Speed has already set his sights on the goal for the season ahead, and is ready to play hard for it.
“I’m looking forward to winning the Barrett Shield, it’ll be tough but we want it,” he said.
“We’ve got to change from being one of the best defensive teams in the competition to adapt and change the attacking structure, or bring some players with more attacking flare.
“They put in an outstanding effort, always tough and play with a good attitude, but we’ve got to fix the attacking to get more points on the board.”
Warwick Cowboys president Dayne Barrett said the club is happy with Speed’s appointment and one of the clubs main priorities is facilitating upcoming talent out of the junior sides to eventually getting them into reserves and the A Grade.
“It’s good to have a different perspective, we’re happy with how the club’s been going over the last few years but we can always improve,” Barrett said.
“We’re looking at what we can do to develop the juniors, with blokes coming out of U19’s and coming into that reserve grade position and develop the talent in the area.”
