A Southern Downs rugby league legend is hanging up the boots after a dream season finale in which the Allora-Clifton Wattles Warriors A Grade team broke the drought and brought the premiership home.
Dale Perkins is wrapping up his A Grade career after winning the TRL premiership for the Allora side on September 18, after eight years with the side, hundreds of games and thousands of kilometres of travel.
The 32-year-old lock from Ballandean would rack up thousands of kilometres travelled per season to go to training and games, and has shown his love of the great game is still present as he is still going to continue playing footy.
Perkins’ rugby league journey is not over completely, the former Wattles captain is just retiring from the A Grade, and is planning to continue his playing with Stanthorpe outside of the TRL, much closer to home.
Perkins said although he’s retired from A Grade competition with the Wattles, he’s still going to be playing football showing that the lock still has a love of the game.
“I’m 32 now and have been travelling from Ballandean to play in TRL for 10 years and I can’t keep doing it forever, plus, my body’s not really up to it anymore,” Perkins said.
Wattles president Amanda O’Halloran fondly remembers Perkin’s time playing for the Wattles and said that he’ll always be remembered as a great club man.
“He’s a great player on the field but also off the field, Dale has been travelling to games and training for a number of years and we’re greatly going to miss him at the club,” O’Halloran said.
“It will be different to start off 2023 without Dale here.”
Wattles A Grade coach, Travis Burns said that Perkins should be proud to go out with such a spectacular bang.
“He’s the bloke on the team who deserves to go out on a highlight, it’s been a pleasure to coach him for the years we were together,” Burns said.
“The amount of travel he’s had to do during his time with the club is outstanding and he thoroughly deserves to go out a winner.
“He was always consistent and always gave 100 per cent, I’m really happy he went out on a high.”
