Southern Downs Regional Council has delivered an update on a regional community hub after previously resolving not to extend the current operator’s contract.

In a statement, council said it would address the concerns of the community regarding the Allora Pool, and were “committed to delivering quality and cost-efficient facilities across the region”.

The concerns were raised by the Allora community following a council meeting in December 2023.

A spokesperson for the SDRC confirmed on Monday said council is committed to delivering quality, cost-efficient facilities across the region.

The pool contractor is a beloved local, Andrew ‘Fidgey’ Fidge, and the council’s move has caused quite the stir for Allora locals.

“Current operator Andrew Fidge is very well respected in the local community and many people in Allora have contacted council with their concerns about the proposed arrangement for the 2024-2025 season at the Allora Pool being operated by council,” the spokesperson said.

“Staff are preparing a comprehensive briefing paper for councillors.”

Southern Downs mayor Melissa Hamilton said the Allora Pool was considered an important recreational hub for the community and council would work through the process to balance the mechanics of operating the facility with the community in mind.

“The Allora Pool is an important resource for residents and its management plays a crucial role in maintaining its accessibility and quality,” Ms Hamilton said.

“Current operator Andrew Fidge is very well respected in the local community and many people in Allora have contacted council with their concerns about the arrangements for the 2024-2025 season at the Allora Pool.

“We as councillors are listening to the community and we have asked council staff to fully brief us on the proposal as it stands.

“As the briefing paper is being prepared, I hope that it will provide valuable insights to ensure the continued operation and success of this community facility.”

Residents were quick to support Mr Fidge, making it clear he was a prominent and beloved part of the Allora community.

“So disappointing. Another case of a village in our community being treated as 2nd class. In my 56 years involvement with the pool … the pool has never been better. Andrew and his team had that pool in pristine condition. However it is Andrew that we will all miss so much,” one commenter said.

“Bloody joke, sorry to hear this, it’s disappointing news for the Allora community, thanks for your dedication, it just shows that this council doesn’t care about the families and residents of Allora,” another said.

“Devastating news for the community. Southern Downs Regional Council have yet again let down the community.”

It’s been a massive issue for the small town of Allora, after previously dealing with a council which locals say didn’t care about them.

“Council wishes to advise the Allora community that Andrew Fidge remains the pool operator up to the winter recess. The new season commences in September 2024, and this gives the new council ample time to consider whether we should review the decision of the previous council,” Ms Hamilton said.

“We will keep the community updated on this matter and will endeavour to ensure that any review is completed in May so as to give certainty to both Andrew Fidge and the Allora community.”
