COMMENT: Why is aging disgracefully the norm?

WHEN are we going to put them into the spotlight? Because they sure as hell can't afford to turn on their own.

GETTING old sucks.

Not the wrinkles or the dicky knee that's likely to flare up every time you dismount the recliner.

Not the fact you're likely to lose your teeth at every family function, or lose control of your bodily ones. That's just all part of the aging process.

The sucky part, is that aging gracefully (bi-focals and forgetful moments included) is a luxury in today's day and age.

There is nothing graceful about having to skip meals because you can't afford to buy groceries, or living with your lights off in an attempt to minimise electricity costs.

And there sure isn't anything graceful about having to spend the majority of your pension on rising rent, while the piddly dollar figure going into your bank account stays at its low excuse for a "liveable” income.

Our front page story today is just another reality check that our senior citizens are the ones suffering the most as prices continue to rise around us.

I am constantly amazed at the amount of time and government money is spent trying to help those who are unemployed or on the dole, and the lack of attention we pay to the ones really struggling - the ones who have worked for 60 years, have fought in wars and sport medals on their chests every Anzac Day; the ones who really deserve a relaxing ride to the end.

C'mon, Australia. When are we going to put them into the spotlight? Because they sure as hell can't afford to turn on their own.
