Cattle truck rolls and catches fire on Albion Street in Warwick, road closed as cows to be herded

A cattle truck has rolled and caught fire on the main road into a major southern Queensland town, leaving livestock needing to be put down or rounded up by emergency and animal management services.

UPDATE: The New England Highway has been completely cleared following a cattle truck rollover in Warwick on Sunday.

The main road into the city was finally reopened about 6pm by emergency services after the large truck was returned to its wheels.

The crash near the Alice Street intersection led to several cattle being euthanised, with others rounded up by crews.

The driver of the truck was unhurt.

Police and fire crews are at the scene of the crash on Albion Street, which occurred at 10.10am near the intersection of Alice Street that features a sharp bend.

The driver managed to get out of the vehicle and was not injured.

Warwick Settler’s Inn manager Ali Yusuf, whose business is around the corner from the crash, said at least seven or eight cattle were being herded by emergency personnel.

“They’re just standing there and watching what’s happened to the truck,” he said.

Firefighters started working to extinguish a blaze that started in the cab of the truck after arriving, with huge amounts of smoke billowing from the vehicle.

It is unclear how many cattle are still in the trailer.
