From the Historic Leyburn Sprints to the Killarney Rodeo and more, August will be an adrenaline-packed month for the Southern Downs with thrilling horse and motorsport events lined up.

The Southern Downs is set to host a suite of iconic sports events in an epic sporting month for the region, including a number of annual favourites making their post-Covid comeback.
Living up to its name as the “horsepower capital”, Warwick’s huge month of motorsports and equestrian competitions will kick off with the Southern Downs Road Racing Series from August 6 - 8.
Stanthorpe will also get a share of the action that weekend with Carnell Raceway to host a drag racing meet on August 7.
The beloved Killarney Rodeo is set to make its post-Covid return on August 14, with dozens of competitors ready to battle it out in the arena.
The IOR Rosebowl Polocrosse Carnival will showcase some of the most skilful horseback riders who will compete across the three-day event from August 20 to 22 at the Warwick Polocrosse Club.
The weekend of sport will be the Morgan Park club’s second massive competition of the year, following the Barastoc Interstate and Shell Cup Carnival in April.
It will be a huge weekend for street sprint action when the Historic Leyburn Sprints comes to town on August 21 and 22.
Following the popular event’s devastating cancellation due to Covid in 2020 this year’s line-up features motorsport, classic car and caravan displays, appearances by the legendary Leyburn drivers, markets, and more.
The Warwick 1000 will return to Morgan Park Raceway from August 27 to 28 where circuit racers from across the country will compete.
Killarney’s annual Waddle, Saddle and Pedal event on August 28 and the sixth Cottonvale Digout at Pete’s Hot Rods between August 27 and 29 will round out the huge month of sport.
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said he was excited to see the range of events bring the region to life.
“Warwick has always been known as the ‘horsepower capital of Australia’ so it’s wonderful that we continue to attract significant events to the whole region, as well as our locals also hosting some huge events,” he said.
“From Morgan Park Raceway, to polocrosse, rodeo, drags and more, the Southern Downs offers plenty of horsepower action and I encourage all of our residents and visitors to share in the atmosphere this August.”
