What started out as a small business venture to keep idle hands busy has become a unique, profitable, crafty empire for a Warwick couple.

Percy and Glenis Pugliese began their 16 year journey that’s led to the success of their beloved Glenrose Estate in 2008, and now they’re ready to pass the patchwork on.

Building four cottages on the vacant acreage of their backyard, the estate became a retreat for couples looking for an escape.

Then came the patchwork shop, which remains Glenis’s pride and joy, filled with handmade patchwork she’s made her niche.

“Glenis developed a bit of empty nest syndrome when our kids moved out, so I suggested we find something she could make her own,” Mr Pugliese said.

“There was a specialist patchwork shop in town at the time that was for sale and I suggested we could bring all the material up to the old homestead and turn it into a shop.”

The shop quickly attracted patchworkers and quilters from all around who were in awe of the estate.

Mr Pugliese said it was a comment made by a group of patchworkers that sparked the idea to turn the estate into patchwork and quilters dream escape.

“It’s just gotten bigger and bigger each year since, we’re always booked out a year in advance,” he said.

“It’s been a fluke (of luck).”

The success of the estate gave Percy and Glenis the opportunity to build their now home on the edge of the property, allowing them to covert the existing home into additional accommodation.

Already sitting at 85 per cent occupancy for 2024, Mr Pugliese said the estate’s popularity has meant at times they’ve had to introduce waitlists for bookings.

“It’s been a captive market, we get visitors from all over and they not only spend money in our shop, but they go out and spend money in the community as well,” he said.

“There’s a group that’s been coming since day dot, and we often have groups who visit multiple times a year.

“It’s going to be sad to say goodbye, but we’ve decided it’s time for us to retire.”

Warwick’s prime location, distanced from the “riff raff” of the big cities, was just one of the many reasons the couple have enjoyed their time living in the region, Mr Pugliese said.

The estate has already attracted quite a bit of interest from prospective buyers, Mr Pugliese said, with the couple hoping to head off in their caravan within the next six months.

“The shop is the only thing that’s become a bit of a thorn in the side, because a lot of people have been intimidated by it and especially those who don’t have much to do with patchwork,” he said.

“We’re hoping someone will take it on and even move it into town, which would free up some space (on the property), because it’s a world class shop and a real credit to Glenis for all the work that’s gone into it.

“The sky’s the limit with opportunities.”

As enjoyable as their time on the Southern Downs has been, Percy and Glenis are ready to pack up their caravan and go on an adventure of their own.

The property at 138 Ogilvie Rd features four cottages, a homestead, as well as two separate workspaces, and award-winning gardens.

Listed by Warwick Lifestyle Property agent Joanne Burgess, the estate is sitting on the market at an impressive $2.75m.
