SHE HAS been calling the shots from behind the microphone for 35 years at campdrafts across the country, and last night Lorna Fanning was awarded the Australian Stock Horse Society Volunteer of the Year Award.

"I am very honoured," Mrs Fanning said.

"I never dreamed I would win.

"When the CEO rang to tell me I'd won, it didn't really sink in.

"Then all of a sudden I realised I'd won.

"Last year I won a special services award and now this. I just can't believe it."

Mrs Fanning is currently the president of the Eastern Downs branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society.

Last year she announced at the West Moreton and Gympie Branch Futurity, Maturity and Challenge events and the Gelding Incentive Drafts.

She also announced the campdraft section of the challenge class at the Royal Brisbane Show.

Mrs Fanning is the chief steward and announcer for the Australian stock horse classes at the Warwick Show.

Mrs Fanning said there was nothing else she would rather be doing.

"I love volunteering," she said.

"It makes me feel like I'm helping people and I love to help people."

Mrs Fanning became involved with the Australian Stock Horse Society in the mid '80s.

"I love all horses, especially Australian stock horses," she said.

"I used to ride them and I still own some as well."

Mrs Fanning said the most challenging part was the announcing.

"It (announcing) is challenging and tiring especially when you have a huge weekend event," she said.

"But it (announcing) is also my favourite part."
