ALLORA has claimed victory in the sixth annual Readers' Challenge competition held at Warwick State High School last week.

It was the first time a team from Allora has won the competition.

Allora State School librarian Lea-anne Weier said she was very proud of the students.

"The students gave up many lunch hours and their free time," she said.

"They worked really hard to read all the books.

"They even wrote out practice questions and answers to prepare for the big day.

"They put the effort in and it paid off."

There were a total of 21 teams in the contest, from Scots PGC College, Warwick East, Warwick West, Warwick Central, Yangan, Glennie Heights and Allora.

Year 9 students from Warwick State High School chose the books and wrote the questions as well.

This year's books were The Hobbit, The Legend of the Golden Snail, The Refugee and Pizza Cake.

Each team had to read the same four books and then had to answer 15 questions for each book.

The team with the highest points was then declared the winner.

Mrs Weier said it was a close call.

"Allora Team 1 had a total of 34 points," she said.

"Warwick East came second with 33 points.

"Allora Team 3 came third."

Mrs Weier said it was a great concept.

"It is a great experience for the kids," she said.

"Whether they win or lose it is a great way to promote reading and reading groups.

"Anything that gets kids reading is good."

Mrs Weier said she would like to thank the teachers at Allora State School for the efforts in preparing the kids for the competition especially Leanne Kay and Ros Hibberd.
