Two lanes of general traffic across the Victoria Bridge will close next month as construction of a major public transport project ramps up, with motorists being urged to plan alternative routes through the inner city.
From January 24 2021, any traffic heading toward the city through South Brisbane and West End will instead have to used the Merivale Bridge or the tolled Go Between Bridge.
Residents of the 4101 postcode will be eligible for a $100 toll subsidy on the Go Between, which is operated by Transurban, as a result of the Victoria Bridge’s closure to general traffic.
The closure will facilitate more bus lanes and the start of construction of the Brisbane Metro project.
“Temporary signage will be in place from December 2020 to provide notice ahead of the closure and will remain in place to assist motorists following the closure of the bridge to general traffic,” council’s website said.
“Changes to permanent directional signage will ensure traffic is directed appropriately.”
In addition, extra bike lanes and pedestrian space will be incorporated into the design.
“As part of Council’s plan to deliver improved public realm and active transport connection, Council has been planning to close the Victoria Bridge to general traffic since early 2016.”
