Vandalised car sits on Lutwyche street for three years, since owner is paying rego

Residents have complained tirelessly to get a wrecked car removed from their northside street, but council says it’s powerless because the “vehicle” is registered and legally parked.

RESIDENTS on Brisbane’s Northside have been forced to put up with their street being blighted by an unroadworthy car for nearly four years which council admits it is powerless to remove.

The Ford Falcon, littered with rubbish and shattered window shards, has been sitting on Thistle St, Lutwyche since at least June 2016.

The Courier-Mail visited the vehicle, finding it without number plates and completely unroadworthy.

The front windscreen is the only intact pane of glass, with all other windows broken and side mirrors smashed.

The vehicle’s tires are completely flat, its indicator lights ripped off and the car’s rusty exterior strewn with sticky tape.

Yet surprisingly authorities are hamstrung, unable to move the car, since the owner is still paying its rego.

Colin, who knows the owner and lives next door, said the car’s long and sad decline started one night three years ago.

“Somebody punctured his tires and ever since its sat there copping vandalism,” Colin said.

He described the owner as “stubborn.”

“The only way to get rid of it is to put a parking meter there, and even then he’d probably pay for it,” he said.

Another woman said the car had been getting worse each time she’d visited the street over the past 18 months, labelling it an “eyesore.”

Brisbane City Council has admitted it has received 20 complaints from residents fed up with the blight.

A council spokesman said the vehicle had since been referred to the Department of Main Roads and Transport.

“The vehicle you are referring to is registered and legally parked, so Council is unable to take any enforcement action,” he said.
