Valley Metro’s cinemas scrapped as Fortitude Valley Woolies opening date revealed

A cinema that would’ve sat above Brisbane’s second busiest train station has been scrapped, as parts of the redevelopment are revealed and opening dates announced.

Plans for a cinema at one of Brisbane’s busiest transport hubs has been scrapped.

The Valley Metro project, which is overhauling the precinct above Fortitude Valley’s train station, was initially proposing to have a cinema complex.

Construction hoarding has come down around the precinct’s food court in recent weeks, with the KFC and Guzman Y Gomez now open.

The Woolworths store, which is replacing the Foodworks, is also scheduled to open in March, according to Colliers International national director Bo Veivers.

“The next tranche of retail will open in March, along with the Woolies,” Mr Veivers said.

“The general foot traffic going through the train station there is also coming back to pre-COVID levels.”

Fortitude Valley is promoted by Valley Metro as being the second busiest station in Brisbane.

But the Hoyts Cinemas shown prominently in earlier renders for the project won’t be included.

“That’s not going ahead,” Mr Veivers said. “There was intention to do something there cinema-wise,” he said.

Meanwhile, the food court has been totally transformed, with earlier hoarding which herded commuters through a “maze” of tight corridors torn down to reveal a rejuvenated precinct.
