Police have confirmed they are treating the blaze as suspicious but are working to determine a number of factors, including the source and origin of the fire and whether the occupants of the unit were in a romantic relationship.

It comes after harrowing witness accounts described the unfolding horror on the street.

A neighbour said he was on the back deck with his infant daughter went he started to hear “popping” and noticed smoke “billowing” from the nearby complex.

“I came running out the front with my daughter … the lady came running out, burnt to a crisp,” he said.

“Tragically a man’s body has been located within the actual unit, crime scene has been declared and investigation are ongoing,” Insp Crabbe said.

QFES fire investigator Daniel Rasmussen described the scene as “traumatic” with “multiple” calls for service.

“When crews got here there was a very intense fire in the back unit,” he said.

“Flames were coming out of every window and door so an aggressive attack had to be made with hose lines and breathing apparatus to make entry to the house.”

“There were flames coming out of the door, I ran to the front of the door at the bottom of the stairs,” Mr Simpson.

“The occupant of the house the woman ran out on the road, fell at the end of the driveway, with another woman looking after her, men running around trying to find hoses.”

Ms Simpson said she could hear the women screaming “there is someone left in the house”.

Next-door neighbour Lelia Donato said she heard a noise and woman and a man yelling just after 4pm and was in the shower.

Ms Danato rushed outside where she saw flames billowing from the back of the complex.

“It sounded like they were throwing things in the back of a ute, metal, the woman kept on screaming,” she said.

“When I came out I saw the flames at the back of the place and I thought my house was going to catch fire.”

Mr Rasmussen said the fire investigation unit would work with police to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

“Luckily in this case the structure was a stand-alone building … this was a concrete building, relatively easy to contain,” he said

“Most fires are treated [as] suspicious until we can determine a cause.”

Asked whether there was an early indication of the fire’s origin, Mr Rasmussen said: “It is a very small unit but no, we will do a thorough investigation to determine that”.

“That’s the problem with modern furnishings and modern houses, there a very high fuel load and very flammable … 50 years ago you had 17 minutes to get out of a house, now you have two to three minutes.

“Everything just burns hotter and faster … it is always a tragedy when we investigate a fatal house fire.”

Mr Rasmussen said the fire investigation unit hoped to bring “closure” for the family of the deceased.
