Six people assessed after house fire at Rochedale South

Six people have been pulled from a burning house south of Brisbane today, with the fire claiming the lives of two dogs who were inside at the time.

Six people have been assessed by paramedics after fire erupted at a home at Rochedale South.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said all patients were stable, with two treated for smoke inhalation and superficial burns.

The other people were not injured, but police have confirmed two dogs died at the scene.

The Service initially reported that two people had suffered life-threatening injuries.

The fire erupted at the home at the corner of Rochedale Rd and Netherby St at Rochedale South at 9.19am.

The single-storey brick home was engulfed by flames when crews arrived.

At least three fire crews were at the scene battling the blaze.

A QFES spokeswoman said the fire was under control about 10am.

She said crews would now “liaise with fire investigators”.

Police have set up a crime scene at the property and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.

“Police are investigating a house fire that occurred in Rochedale South this morning, June 18,” a police spokesman said.

“Two occupants, a 33-year-old male and a 29-year-old female, were able to evacuate the property with a dog and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“Two dogs died as a result of the fire.

“A crime scene has been declared and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact police.”

Neighbour Teresa Cullen called firefighters after hearing her neighbours screaming out for help.

“We heard our neighbours starting to yell help, then I looked over and saw there was smoke coming from the top of the house, so I called the fire brigade,” Ms Cullen said.

“I could see the house was on fire, I knew there was something really wrong.

“She was burned across her face, her hair was singed back, her hands were burned.

“They’ve got three dogs, but two of the dogs were stuck inside, so I believe those two dogs have died.

“They kept trying to go back inside to get the dogs …”

Ms Cullen said a truck full of workmen pulled up to help out.

“The workmen pulled up, they jumped the fences, went inside, and pulled them out,” she said.

“The workmen got one dog but they couldn’t keep going back in.

“At that stage the house was throwing a lot of smoke out of it.

“No one could see anything, the smoke was very, very black.”

Trent Skinner jumped into action after hearing his neighbours’ yelling for help.

“I was at home in my oodie pyjamas when all of a sudden I hear people screaming for help,” Mr Skinner said.

“So I ran outside and saw the home on fire. I went in there with another bloke, jumped the fence and tried to save a dog.

“We cornered the dog, but the dog was obviously too scared.

“We then saw some gas bottles and thought we better get out of here.

“We deemed the dog was going to be safe, but the other two apparently didn’t make it.”
