A young boy killed while riding his bike home from school on the Sunshine Coast has been remembered as a talented golfer and gentle young man.

Gurmantar Gill, 11, died on Tuesday after he was struck by a bus while riding his bike at the corner of Jingellic Dr and Karawatha Dr in Buderim about 4pm.

He was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

His father, Daljinder Gill, said his son was riding his bike home from Matthew Flinders Anglican College where he was in year six when he was hit by the bus.

“He was just 50m from home. Just one more left turn and he would have been home,” Mr Gill said.

“Yesterday he said he wanted to ride to school, normally we pick him up but yesterday he wanted to ride.

“I still can’t believe we don’t have him.”

Gurmantar grew up on the Sunshine Coast with his parents and big sister.

He loved sport, and was also a very talented golfer who wanted to turn professional when he grew up.

Golf coach John Wright taught Gurmantar for about three years, saying he was a beautiful young man with a lot of talent.

“He was a beautiful kid,” Mr Wright said.

“He’s a kid you’d always stop and talk to … just a gentle soul.”

Mr Gill said Gurmantar played in golf competitions most weekends – as recently as Sunday.

He was a part of Maroochy River Golf Club.

Mr Gill said Gurmantar was his best friend, and would be deeply missed by his family.

“He always took me to golf, I’m just going to have those memories now.”

The crash involved a CDC Queensland bus service.

A number of students from Mountain Creek State School were on the bus at the time with six were treated on scene.

The bus driver, a man in his 60s, was not physically injured, and is assisting police with investigations.

A CDC spokeswoman said they were devastated about what had happened.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that the young boy involved in the incident has subsequently passed away,” she said.
