A FEMALE paramedic has allegedly been punched in the face and dragged from her vehicle outside a backpackers in far north Queensland.

A pair of paramedics had been treating a 21-year-old male French tourist who was feeling unwell at the Minnie Street hostel in Cairns at around 3.40am on Wednesday.

A QAS spokeswoman said the man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, had become agitated and aggressive towards the paramedics who retreated to their ambulance.

Police say the man had rushed towards the ambulance, punching the woman, 42, in the face and dragging her out of the vehicle.

He was restrained by the male paramedic and members of the public and sedated. The female paramedic suffered facial injuries, while her alleged attacker was taken to Cairns Base Hospital in police custody.
