The cause of an inferno that ripped through an up-market Hawthorne street in Brisbane’s east late on Saturday night has not yet been determined.
A man was still battling serious burns in hospital on Sunday night after being pulled from the fire, which completely destroyed two old Queenslanders and left another severely damaged.
The fire broke out in the back of one of the houses on Forbes St address just before 8.30pm on Saturday.
When fire crews arrived, two homes were completely engulfed by the blaze, with more than 45 firefighters battling to extinguish it.
Neighbours worked quickly to get the residents out alive and attempted to save their properties with garden hoses.
Residents in one of the neighbouring properties, who wished to remain anonymous, said their partners ran into the front yard to retrieve a man who had “serious burns and disorientation”.
“Our husbands grabbed the guy,” they said.
“He was very badly burned, he was outside but very confused.
“The first thing we saw was a wall of orange and flames and then it jumped to the next house by the time we got downstairs.”
A 66-year-old man was treated for significant burns to up to 80 per cent of his body.
He was taken in a serious condition and placed on life support at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
Two other men, aged in their 30s, were taken in stable conditions to RBWH for smoke inhalation.
